Consumers in deregulated areas of the United States have the ability to choose their own energy supplier. Retail energy suppliers purchase energy wholesale and then resell that energy in plans that fit customers' needs. The advantage in choosing a new energy supplier is that it could offer lower rates or a better plan than your utility can offer.

Choosing a new energy supplier does not mean you are replacing your utility. By switching to an energy supplier, you are simply selecting a different company to provide your energy supply. Your utility will deliver whatever energy supply you choose.
