If you've got an alternative-fuel vehicle, or simply want to support the biofuels industries, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has introduced an app for iPhone users that can make your life a lot easier. Using data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory database, the Alternative Fueling Station Locator app uses the Google Maps interface to quickly locate all sorts of alternative fueling stations around the country.
Accurate mapping of fueling stations
Introduced on November 4, 2013, the Alternative Fueling Station Locator app gives you access to more than 15,000 stations in the U.S. that offer one or more types of alternative fuel. All the most popular alternative fuel options are represented, including:
- Natural Gas
No matter where you are, using this app you can help you quickly locate the closest station offering the alternative fuel your vehicle needs.
How it works
When you first open the app, you'll have the opportunity to select which fuel you'd like to map. Don't worry if you want to find stations for multiple fuels, changing your selection is easy with the in-app menu.
Once you've selected your fuel type, you'll have the opportunity to allow the app to trace your location or you can enter a ZIP code. On the familiar Google Maps interface, you'll see pins for each of the stations offering your chosen fuel type in the area. By clicking on an individual station you'll receive important information such as the details of the fuel type offered, the station's business hours and its status as a public or private facility.
Perhaps most useful, the app makes it easy to get driving directions to the station with just one click, or you can always call the phone number listed if you have any further questions.
