Why should we recycle?

Recycling is important for many reasons that directly affect your future. Next time you finish a bottle of water or read a magazine, use these reasons as a reminder of why it’s important for you to recycle them:
  1. Saves natural resources and wildlife: Recycling helps preserve natural resources like trees for paper! If we help preserve natural resources, we’re also helping wildlife keep their homes.
  2. Saves energy: Recycling helps save energy because manufacturers don’t need to produce products from raw materials. Instead, they can repurpose recycled goods!
  3. Reduces landfills: When the trash truck picks up your waste, they bring it straight to an area to be buried called a landfill. Landfills can overflow and harm the environment.

Tips For Recycling

Recycling can be easy! With these tips, you can help reduce the waste piling up in landfills.
  1. Use a recycling bin: Keep a recycle bin next to your trash can so you can easily separate your waste.
  2. Buy recycled: You can find recycled material in anything from printing paper to shoes and backpacks!
  3. Donate: Another form of recycling is to donate your used clothes or toys to a local donation shelter. The sweatshirt you outgrew or the toy you’re done using will be cherished by another kid.
  4. Bring your own bags: Next time you help at the grocery store or go shopping, bring your own reusable bags! Plus, think about how easy it is to carry your goods in an unbreakable bag.

Recycling Repurposed

Did you know that it can take some trash up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills? That’s why it’s important that we recycle the accepted materials that we don’t need anymore.
  • Soda cans can be turned into new aluminum cans! Luckily recycling aluminum doesn’t reduce the quality of metal.
  • Plastic bottles can be repurposed into various products such as jackets, carpet, backpacks and more!
  • Newspapers are typically reused to make many paper goods such as egg cartons, construction paper or paper plates.
  • Soda bottles are turned into other glass materials such as new bottles, jars or fiberglass!

Reuse your materials!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 258 million tons of trash was generated in the U.S. and over 89 million tons were recycled and composted. Beyond recycling, reusing your own materials is a great way to reduce your waste. These are some ways you can reuse materials in your daily routine:
  • To go containers for your lunch
  • Canvas bag for your shopping trip
  • Magazines and newspapers for wrapping paper
  • Old towels as rags for cleaning

The Dont’s Of Recycling

Don't:
  • Toss used pizza boxes in the recycling. The cardboard is recyclable, but make sure to remove any food or residue beforehand.
  • Recycle plastic shopping bags. You can reuse the bags, but recycling centers won’t accept them.
  • Bag your recycling. Plastic bags can obstruct the machines at recycling plants, so keep everything separated in a bin.
  • Abandon eWaste. Electronics are typically recycled in a separate collection facility, so check where you can drop them off locally.

Did You Know?

  • The average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day. That’s almost as much as two full liter bottles of soda!
  • A glass container can go from a recycling bin to a store shelf in as few as 30 days.
  • You can buy guitars, chairs, clocks, sunglasses and more made out of 100% recycled materials!
