What is CenterPoint Energy?
CenterPoint Energy is an energy utility company that operates across six states, providing power to over 3.2 million people in the Southeast and Midwest. Headquartered in Houston, CenterPoint Energy serves as the TDSP for the Houston metropolitan area in Texas’ deregulated energy market.

Understand CenterPoint Energy electric service
Texas has a deregulated energy market, which means utility companies operate differently than in the rest of the country. As an electricity utility, or TDSP, CenterPoint Energy oversees power lines and electric delivery but does not sell electricity directly to customers.
Instead, residents and businesses purchase energy from an REP. If you do not select an REP, the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT) automatically assigns you a Provider of Last Resort (POLR). This service often has a more expensive rate than an REP that you choose.
The PUCT also sets delivery fees for Texas utility companies. Everyone in the CenterPoint Energy service area – as well as other utility areas across the state – pays the PUCT delivery rate regardless of which REP they choose.
Enter your ZIP code to shop electricity rates plans in your area to avoid a pricey POLR rate. The rates we show include delivery fees so you can be sure what you’re seeing is what you’ll get.
