Get to know Harlingen
Founded by Lon C. Hill in 1904, Harlingen sits in the center of the Rio Grande Valley roughly 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Despite a strong agricultural history, Harlingen became known for its military airfield constructed during World War II, which boosted the population from 23,000 in 1950 to 41,000 in 1960. Since the closure of the airfield, Harlingen has converted the space into the Rio Grande Valley International Airport.
After the airfield closed in 1962, the face of Harlingen residents has changed from military personnel to “Winter Texans” who flee the Midwest and Canada from November to March. This shift earned Harlingen a Go Texan Retirement Community acknowledgement by the Texas Department of Agriculture in 2008.
