Is Pure Planet a good option as an energy supplier?
Pure Planet is a relatively new energy supplier which launched in Bath in 2017. It focuses on providing green energy to customers throughout the UK at a cheaper price than more harmful types of energy. It’s a very modern supplier in the sense that it operates entirely online, with customer support handled by a dedicated team and the Pure Planet community of customers. In the 2021 Uswitch awards, Pure Planet customers voted it as the provider with the Best Green Services and Best Mobile App.
Pure Planet customers have the option of choosing between a standard variable or a fixed energy tariff. Like the standard variable and fixed tariffs offered by other providers, Pure Planet’s options allow customers the flexibility of a rolling contract (but potentially be subject to price rises), or the financial security of a fixed charge per unit of energy used.
Pure Planet also makes clear that it doesn’t overcharge for its energy in order to make a profit. Its Zero Markup policy ensures that customers pay the right price for the energy they use.
Pure Planet’s renewable energy tariffs are its bread and butter. All of its electricity tariffs are 100% renewable and powered by solar, wind and a tiny amount of hydro. Its website states that the electricity fuel mix for April 2019 to March 2020 was 89% wind and 11% solar.
As far as gas is concerned, Pure Planet offsets all carbon used via environmental projects around the world, from Peru to the Philippines. As a result, the provider estimates that the average customer saves or offsets 4.8 tonnes of CO2 each year.
As already mentioned, Pure Planet took the top spot in two categories in the most recent Uswitch awards. It was also the runner-up in the Best Deal For You and Best Transfer Process categories. It is also a Which? recommended energy provider.
As of April 2021, Pure Planet has an average rating of 4.6 from 16,900 reviews on TrustPilot, which is an excellent score and shows that, for the majority of customers, it is fulfilling its pledges and promises to them.
The question of what constitutes a good option as an energy supplier differs for each customer, but it’s clear that Pure Planet has a lot going for it. It’s heavily aligned with modern-day concerns and values as far as renewable energy is concerned, and it seems to back its words up with actions. Whether it is more or less affordable for customers depends on each person’s financial situation - it may be the case that other providers are cheaper. Each customer should decide which part of an energy provider’s service is most important to them, and use that to guide them towards an energy deal that meets their needs.
