Energy deregulation in Georgia

In Georgia, natural gas is deregulated (although electricity is not). The legislation came into effect in 1997 as a way to create competition among gas marketers and protect consumer interests. As a result, Georgia natural gas providers have had to work to earn the business of customers around the state.

To ensure fair pricing and regulate the industry, the Georgia Public Service Commission oversees the deregulated natural gas market. The PSC offers guidance to energy consumers about how to choose the right gas marketer and assigns a designated provider for low-income residents who may not qualify for service from another supplier.

For instance, gas marketers will offer fixed-rate plans, which allow you either to lock in a rate over a predetermined contract period. You might also find variable-rate plans, which are generally shorter-term options with rates that fluctuate depending on the market rate. You might even qualify for a prepaid natural gas plan, which allows you to pay for your gas usage ahead of time.

If you choose not to buy from a supplier, you’ll be assigned a natural gas supplier that serves your area. However, you won’t be able to choose your rate (and often, these rates are higher than if you would shop around to pick your own plan).
