Texas energy plan FAQs

What is a fixed-rate plan?

With a fixed-rate plan, the rate you’re charged for your electricity will remain the same throughout the life of your contract. The amount of your total bill can vary based on how much electricity you use.

What is a variable-rate plan?

With a variable-rate plan, the rate you’re charged for your electricity can change every month based on market conditions. The rate can be low one month and significantly higher the next.

Who do I call if there’s an outage?

Your local utility is responsible for restoring any outages. In Texas, this would be AEP Texas, CenterPoint Energy, Oncor Electric Delivery or Texas-New Mexico Power.

Why does Choose Energy run a credit check?

Many electricity plans require a deposit in order to start service. Choose Energy checks your credit to determine the amount of that deposit. The higher your credit score, the lower your deposit could be. You may not have to pay a deposit.

A few things to remember

  • Don’t forget to read your plan’s Electricity Facts Label before signing up. It contains important information including:
    • Price per kilowatt-hour based on usage
    • % renewable energy sourcing
    • Early termination fees
  • Enjoy hassle-free supplier setup. Once your order has been confirmed, your new supplier will set up service with your utility, or transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP) – but don’t worry, there shouldn’t be any interruption to your power during the switch.
  • Understanding your electricity bill. Your local TDSP will still deliver your electricity and maintain electric infrastructure including meters and power lines. Your utility fees can be found as TDU or TDSP charges on your monthly bill. They are independent of your supplier rate.
