How does deregulation work?

Deregulated energy gives you the power to choose your electric provider. Much of Texas, excluding Austin and San Antonio, has a deregulated energy provider system in place. Natural gas is not deregulated in Texas.

In deregulated areas, energy utilities are not allowed to own both the means to both generate and transmit electricity. Regulated markets allow for complete ownership of electricity generation and transmission to customers.

If you have more questions on how deregulation works or you are ready to start planning your move to another provider or utility, SaveOnEnergy is here to help. Here are some valuable resources to help you find a solution:

The difference between a utility and a provider

The utility company in Texas maintains the means of providing your home or business with that energy. The provider is the company that you may choose to supply your electricity, depending on the area your home or business is in. Providers are what you go through as you shop for plans, pay your bills, and reach out to customer service.

Here is an example. If you experience a problem with the actual delivery of your energy, such as a downed power line, you would call the utility company. If you experience a problem with your billing statement or energy plan, you would call the provider.
