Founded in 2006, CPL Retail Energy is a Direct Energy company that offers Texas electricity supply rates to the southern area of the state that is served by the AEP Central utility. It offers a variety of CPL rates with its plans – from secured-rate supply plans that last up to three years to CPL Prepaid that allows consumers to pay for their electricity supply ahead of time. According to its website, CPL Retail Energy is dedicated to offering economical, reliable and customer-centric service. Along with providing Texas electricity supply rates, CPL offers home services such as home protection plans and HVAC service, making it a multi-service provider.

CPL Retail Energy's Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program

CPL offers the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program to financially assist customers who are experiencing a rough patch. To fund this program, CPL contributes annually to this cause and encourages its customers to do so as well by checking the "bill assistance" box on their bill each month. Customers of CPL can check this box and enter in how much they would like to donate to this fund to help their neighbors in times of need. Those customers who are struggling financially and looking to receive up to $600 assistance on CPL bills through this program must meet eligibility criteria through local agencies such as the Bee Community Action Agency or the Community Services Agency of South Texas to qualify. CPL also offers information on agency assistance programs such as the federal government's Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program.

Regardless of your supplier, your utility remains the same

CPL may be able to offer you competitive CPL rates, but your utility will remain the same unless you move to a different service area. Utilities typically own and operate the distribution system and its infrastructure. The utility charges on your bill each month cover these services. Also, it is important to note that because the utility is responsible for the distribution system, it is the entity that you must call to report any electrical emergencies such as an outage, flickering lights or a downed line. Keep your utility's number nearby so it can provide you with the assistance needed in the event of a power emergency.
