What is PECO?
Formerly known as the Philadelphia Electric Company, PECO is Pennsylvania’s largest transmission and delivery utility with more than 2 million customers within its service area. It is a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, a multibillion dollar energy provider in the continental U.S. and Canada. Based in Philadelphia, PECO energy services the city’s surrounding counties: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York.
PA Power Switch
Pennsylvania is a state with energy choice, which means consumers can join the PA Power Switch program. The program went into effect in January 2011 and allows for competition among Pennsylvania energy retailers. Consumers now have the ability to switch from their designated utility to a supplier of their choosing.
Are PECO rates competitive?
Possibly. However, thanks to energy choice, PECO rates for energy supply are not your only option. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission regulates PECO energy supply, as it does for all public utilities. This does not mean that PECO energy supply rates are always higher or lower than electric generation suppliers. If this utility doesn’t match your energy wants or needs, you can explore your options and get your electricity and natural gas supply from a supplier that does. If you choose an alternative supplier, you will remain connected with PECO. The utility will continue to deliver electricity and natural gas to your home in the same reliable fashion as if it was still supplying your home with these commodities.
Call PECO to report emergencies
No matter what entity you purchase your energy from, your local utility will remain in charge of operating and maintaining all power lines and gas pipelines within the service area. If you experience any energy emergency such as a downed power line or a gas leak, please call PECO, not your chosen supplier, to report emergencies.
