Texas energy plan FAQ

What is the difference between fixed and variable rate energy plans?

A fixed rate plan guarantees one set rate for the entirety of your contract. This rate will not change, regardless of price fluctuations in the energy market. A variable rate plan does not protect customers from these changes but may allow you to benefit from lows in the market.

Will I need to pay a deposit when I sign up for an energy plan?

It’s possible. Deposits and credit checks are a normal part of the energy buying process. Most energy providers require credit checks or deposits before they begin providing service. When you select a plan, we’ll tell you whether you’ll need to pay a deposit. To learn more about your options, see our no deposit page.

What do I do if I’m moving to a new address?

If you are planning a move, you will not be charged an early termination fee. This means you’ll be able to stay with your current provider or switch to a new provider at no charge. You can shop for a new plan up to 90 days before you need to begin service. Also, most homes have smart meters installed, meaning you can begin your service without a technician visit.

How do I switch to a new electricity provider?

Switching to a new provider isn’t as difficult as it sounds. You can switch up to 14 days before your contract ends without an early termination fee. When you switch, your new provider will work with the old one, so you will not need to worry about interruptions in your service.

A few things to remember

  • Don’t forget to read your plan’s Electricity Facts Label before signing up. It contains important information including:
    • Price per kilowatt-hour based on usage
    • % renewable energy sourcing
    • Early termination fees
  • Enjoy hassle-free supplier setup. Once your order has been confirmed, your new supplier will set up service with your utility, or transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP) – but don’t worry, there shouldn’t be any interruption to your power during the switch.
  • Understanding your electricity bill. Your local TDSP will still deliver your electricity and maintain electric infrastructure including meters and power lines. Your utility fees can be found as TDU or TDSP charges on your monthly bill. They are independent of your supplier rate.
