About Ambit Energy

Since 2002, when the Texas energy market was deregulated, residents have had the power to choose their retail power provider. This can be a great way to try to save on your energy bills, but it’s important to consider your options carefully to choose the provider and plan that are most ideal for your household. Founded in 2006 in Dallas, Ambit Energy has grown rapidly. While it remains a Texas company, Ambit Energy now serves a total of 16 states and the District of Columbia.

Ambit Energy plans

Secure Savings

This is a basic, traditional fixed-rate plan with term lengths of 12 to 36 months. Supply rates are lowest if you choose a 36-month term, and they will not fluctuate from month to month. However, there is an early termination fee of $199 to $299, depending on term length, if you end your contract early.

Summer Break

With term lengths of 12 to 24 months, this is also a fixed-rate plan. But this one gives you a discount of 50% for all usage between midnight June 1 and 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30. The early termination fee is $199.

Lone Star Flex

If you’re willing to take a gamble on the energy market, Ambit Energy offers a variable-rate plan known as Lone Star Flex. This is a month to month plan with no early termination fee, but your rates may fluctuate depending on what happens with wholesale energy prices.

Free and Clear Nights

If you are looking for green energy, or use power primarily at night, this plan may be right for you. It uses 100% wind energy, and you will not pay for usage between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. However, daytime rates are at a premium, and the early termination fee is $199.

Texas energy plan FAQs

  • What is a variable-rate energy plan? A variable-rate energy plan is a month to month plan tied to the wholesale energy market. When those prices rise, your rates go up as well.
  • What is a fixed-rate energy plan? A fixed-rate energy plan locks in your electricity-supply rates for the length of your contract, guarding against the volatility of the energy market. However, you must pay an early termination fee if you don’t finish out your contract.
  • What happens if I move? If your provider offers service in your new area, you can simply transfer your service to your new address (possibly on a different plan). Otherwise, you will need to end your contract and select a new retail provider. In Texas, if you can prove you’re moving – say by providing the new address – you are not penalized for ending your contract.
  • Why does SaveOnEnergy.com run a credit check? Our providers require credit checks to determine whether you’ll have to pay a deposit and the amount of that deposit. The exceptions are prepaid no-deposit plans.

A few things to remember

  • Don’t forget to read your plan’s Electricity Facts Label before signing up. It contains important information including:
    • Price per kilowatt-hour based on usage
    • % renewable energy sourcing
    • Early termination fees
  • Enjoy hassle-free supplier setup. Once your order has been confirmed, your new supplier will set up service with your utility, or transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP) – but don’t worry, there shouldn’t be any interruption to your power during the switch.
  • Understanding your electricity bill. Your local TDSP will still deliver your electricity and maintain electric infrastructure including meters and power lines. Your utility fees can be found as TDU or TDSP charges on your monthly bill. They are independent of your supplier rate.
