Texas energy plan FAQ

Types of energy plans

There are two main types of energy plans: fixed and variable. A fixed energy plan means the rate you pay for energy is set in your contract and does not change. It is the more stable option. A variable energy plan means the rate you pay will change with the energy market, whether demand is high or low.

Deposits and credit checks

Most providers require a credit check before they will offer service, and this may mean you need to pay a deposit. However, there are options for customers who want to avoid credit checks and deposits. To learn more, see our no deposit electricity page.

Moving and energy service

If you move during your contract, you will not be charged an early termination fee. This allows you to keep your current provider or switch to a new one. If you decide to switch, you can select your move-in date up to 90 days in advance. Don’t worry about scheduling a technician visit – most homes have smart meters and can be activated remotely.

Switching energy providers

Changing to a different provider is not complicated, but there are a few things to keep in mind. If you have a fixed rate plan, you probably have an early termination fee. You can avoid paying this by switching no sooner than 14 days before the end of your contract. Otherwise, the switching process is easy. Just enter your ZIP code above, select the plan you want, and your new energy provider will take it from there.

A few things to remember

  • Don’t forget to read your plan’s Electricity Facts Label before signing up. It contains important information including:
    • Price per kilowatt-hour based on usage
    • % renewable energy sourcing
    • Early termination fees
  • Enjoy hassle-free supplier setup. Once your order has been confirmed, your new supplier will set up service with your utility, or transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP) – but don’t worry, there shouldn’t be any interruption to your power during the switch.
  • Understanding your electricity bill. Your local TDSP will still deliver your electricity and maintain electric infrastructure including meters and power lines. Your utility fees can be found as TDU or TDSP charges on your monthly bill. They are independent of your supplier rate.
