Deregulated Energy in New York

The New York State Public Service Commission deregulated the state’s energy market in 1996, giving the power of choice to millions of energy customers across the state. Energy deregulation allows national energy suppliers to offer customers competitive prices and products for their electric or natural gas needs. Who provides my power?

The only difference you’ll see in your energy service with a deregulated plan is how much you’re paying for it. Even with a deregulated energy plan, your local utility will continue to deliver reliable electricity or natural gas to your home or business.

Switching is easy – once you sign up with a deregulated supplier through the Choose Energy marketplace, your work is done. Your new supplier will communicate directly with your utility to ensure that there are no interruptions to your power service. If you do experience an outage or other problem, call your utility immediately.
