New Jersey energy rates
Through energy deregulation, New Jersey is one of less than half the states in the country that gives its residents the ability to shop around for the best New Jersey electricity rates by selecting their own electric provider.
This big purchase item requires a lot of research to make the best possible choice from the New Jersey electric suppliers. There are many components to look at, such as whether you want green energy options, how long you want your contract to be, and whether you want a fixed rate or variable rate plan.

Energy deregulation in New Jersey
In 1999, the state of New Jersey passed the Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act (EDECA), which gave its residents the ability to select their own energy plans from New Jersey electric suppliers and natural gas providers. This created more competitive New Jersey natural gas prices and electric prices.
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) oversees the state’s electric and natural gas industries, including the utility companies and energy providers. A public-facing website, NJ Power Switch, helps consumers choose their energy suppliers.

You’ll also want to know about:
- Fixed rate plans — Don’t be surprised by how much your electricity costs. With this type of plan, your usage is billed at the same rate for the length of your contract.
- Variable rate plans — Sometimes you can get a lower rate by having the market dictate the price. With these plans, your rate could potentially go up or down each month.
- Prepaid plans — When you want to pay for electricity once and be done with it, you can select a prepaid plan.
- Renewable energy plans — Wind- and solar-powered electricity are available through a number of green energy plans.
In the end, you don’t have to make a decision. If you don’t choose a provider, you’ll purchase your electricity from your local utility company – likely at higher prices.
