Energy landscape players – Utilities & Suppliers

Texas utility companies are also known as Transmission and Delivery Service Providers (TDSPs) or Transmission & Distribution Utilities (TDUs). Your area’s utility company is responsible for:

  1. Delivering and maintaining your home/business’s power
  2. Responding to and restoring power outages
  3. Monitoring and reading electricity meters
  4. Maintaining area street lights and power lines

TDU or TDSP fees can be found on your plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL) and on your electricity bill – these charges are determined by your local utility and are independent of your supplier rate.

Texas energy suppliers are often referred to as retail energy providers (REPs). These companies buy wholesale energy and sell it to electricity customers in deregulated energy areas across Texas. If you live in one of the deregulated cities listed at the bottom of this page, you must purchase an energy plan from a retail energy provider.

When you shop for an electricity plan in the SaveOnEnergy.com marketplace, suppliers compete for your business by offering low electricity rates and customer incentives, such as rewards programs, green energy sourcing or discounted home services. (If you’re not sure which provider to choose, use this list to compare your options or call the number at the top of the page to speak to one of our SaveOnEnergy.com experts today.)

Types of Energy Rates in Texas

Different electric plans offer different benefits depending what type of energy consumer you are. Energy rates in Texas vary among REPs, but some options to look forward to as far as supply rate types include:

Supply Rate Description
Fixed Fixed-rate supply plans offer consumers a secured rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh) throughout a contract period.
Variable Variable-rate supply plans do not offer a secured rate, which means price per kWh may vary each month.
Indexed Indexed-rate supply plans are similar to variable-rate plans, except an indexed plan is tied to the price of a public commodity.
Prepaid Prepaid supply plans do not require a credit check and allow consumers to pay for energy in advance.
Green Green, or renewable, supply plans allow consumers to offset up to 100 percent of their household or business’ carbon emissions from the building's electricity consumption.

Understanding energy usage, setup and billing

    • Price per kilowatt-hour based on usage
    • % renewable energy sourcing
    • Early termination fees
Check out an example EFL image below.

  • Enjoy hassle-free supplier setup. Once your order has been confirmed, your new supplier will set up service with your transmission and distribution service provider, or utility company, without any interruption to your power during the switch.

  • Understanding your electricity bill. Your local TDSP will still deliver and maintain your home electricity and all related equipment including meters, power lines, etc. Your utility fees can be found as TDU or TDSP charges on your monthly bill – they are independent of your supplier rate.

Many factors affect the rise and fall electric rates in Texas. Here’s a chart with the average retail Texas electric rates through August 2018.

This graph is based on EIA.gov data on the average retail price of electricity (in cents per kWh) for residential customer in Texas.

Renewable energy in Texas and going green

Texas currently produces and consumes more electricity than any other state in the country. This energy consumption is due to its size, but the ample land makes it a major producer of wind power – a renewable, or green, energy source. The environmentally friendly energy created by wind power is available to many Texas residents to supply the electricity in their home or business.

Green energy plans can also include energy produced by comparatively clean natural gas. Consumers can select the percentage of renewable energy they want to receive as part of their energy plan – up to 100 percent.

Renewables accounted for over 15% of electricity generation in Texas in 2017. Many of SaveOnEnergy.com’s partner providers incorporate renewables as a part of their energy generation. Check out each plan’s EFL to learn more about the renewable content that goes into different plans and how they stack up against statewide averages.

History of energy deregulation in Texas

The Texas Senate Bill 7, passed in 2002, gave 5.6 million Texans the power to choose a retail electric provider (REP) to supply electricity to their home or business. This bill facilitated a competitive energy marketplace that 85 percent of Texans can capitalize on today. Energy choice is available to residents in Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth, as well as other cities across Texas.

Various providers in Texas offer competitive rates for different types of consumers, so be sure to check out the electricity plans that SaveOnEnergy.com offers by entering your zip below.

Experiencing a power outage?

Utility companies, or TDSPs, are responsible for transmission and delivery of electricity even in energy deregulated parts of Texas and should be contacted in the event of a power outage. Your retail energy supplier may provide you competitive electric rates or exceptional customer service, but it cannot repair power lines or restore your service.
